Trekkers in Nepal have the option to trek either as Free Individual Trekkers (FIT) or in groups of varying sizes. However, certain regions known as ‘Restricted Areas’ are heavily regulated by the Government of Nepal, and FITs are not permitted. Trekking in these regions requires obtaining a permit from the Department of Immigration.
To acquire these permits, interested trekkers must contact authorized trekking agencies, which will handle the application process with the Department of Immigration. Trekkers must be part of a group of at least two people and be accompanied by a licensed trekking guide. Individual trekkers are not eligible to apply for these permits.
The cost of trekking permits varies by route and is listed in US dollars, though payment must be made in Nepali Rupees. Permits are not issued for periods beyond the trekker’s visa expiration date, so trekkers must ensure their visas are valid for the duration of their trek.
Trekkers must adhere to the following conditions:
- Respect local customs and traditions and avoid activities that conflict with societal norms and culture.
- Trekking alone in Restricted Areas is prohibited; there must be at least two trekkers.
- Guides, porters, and other support staff must be provided with daily remuneration, safety gear, appropriate clothing, and Personal Accident insurance.
- Trekkers must follow the designated routes specified in their permits and are not allowed to deviate. Trekking agencies or guides must enforce this rule.
- Trekkers must follow instructions from authorized officials in Restricted Areas.
- Mountaineers with expedition permits who need to pass through Restricted Areas must also obtain trekking permits but are exempt from the additional permit fees.
Authorized agencies must submit the following documents to apply for trekking permits:
- Online application form (trekkers)
- Copy of passport
- Copy of valid visa covering the trekking period
- Name list of trekkers
- Trekking program schedule
- Guarantee letter from the agency
- Agreement with the agency
- Tax clearance certificate of the trekking agency
- Insurance documents for trekkers and Nepalese staff
- License from the Ministry of Tourism, Culture, and Civil Aviation to operate a trekking business
- License from Nepal Rastra Bank for foreign currency exchange
- Trekking program schedule
- Registration certificate of Permanent Account Number
- Bank payment voucher for permit fees
